A familiar name for more than 30 years

El Mas Gil

The history of Clos d’Agon revolves around the main farmhouse of the estate, Mas Gil, which gives its name to the entire property.

There are written records confirming the existence of vineyards on this estate as early as the 15th century in what was Mas Sabater. In 1792 the current farmhouse was built, today called Mas Gil, which in ancient times was surrounded by 12 hectares of vineyards, planted with hybrid varieties, narrow planting frames and vase conduits.

It was at the end of the 80’s of the last century when the modern stage of our winery began.

The vineyard

The history of Clos d’Agon revolves around the main farmhouse of the estate, Mas Gil, which gives its name to the entire property.

There are written records confirming the existence of vineyards on this estate as early as the 15th century in what was Mas Sabater. In 1792 the current farmhouse was built, today called Mas Gil, which in ancient times was surrounded by 12 hectares of vineyards, planted with hybrid varieties, narrow planting frames and vase conduits.

It was at the end of the 80’s of the last century when the modern stage of our winery began.

Geography
The vineyard is located at the source of "Les Gavarres", surrounded by the mountains of this natural area, which form a kind of amphitheater facing the sea.
Climate
It has a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Tramontana (here already attenuated) and the breezes coming from the Mediterranean, which can be seen from all the plots.
Floor
The vines grow on clay and slate soils with a mainly north-south orientation. The altitude of the plots ranges from 40 to 140 meters.
Grapes
The red varieties used are Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot and the white varieties Viognier, Marsanne and Roussane. We have recently reconverted some plots to plant red, white and gray Grenache.
Tasting
Our wines are fresh, fine and elegant, with great cellaring capacity.
Elaboration
We try to preserve the quality that the grapes bring from the field and express the particularities of each vintage. We pay special attention to cleanliness in all processes.

The history of Clos d'Agon

Acquisition of the estate by Philippe Dambois. Birth of the Clos d'Agon brand.
1989
Planting of the first plots with new varieties, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, along with Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne and Monastrell.
1990

1992
Plantation of two more plots of Viognier and Roussanne respectively, with which the first 8 ha are completed.
1995
Arrival of the current owners. Advice from Peter Sisseck.
1999
New plots are planted in the higher areas of the property. It is mainly committed to Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Small areas of Petit Verdot are also planted.
2001
Construction work begins on the new winery, designed by the architect Chus Manzanares.
2002
New plots are planted. Cabernet Franc predominates. Some Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot are also planted.
2004
The works in the construction of the winery are finished. It is a modern construction but integrated into its environment, slightly inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian.
2005
A new plot of Merlot is planted.
2006
Miguel Coronado is the new Technical Director. He continues to hold that position to this day.
2009
New plots are planted. In this case we opted for other varieties, more rooted in our environment: Red Garnacha, White Garnacha and Gray Garnacha, as well as Viognier.
2019
We became part of the great Grandes Pagos de España family.
